Three models were constructed for analyzing the population characteristics ofC. chinensis on stored beans; model A describing the whole reproductive process with a single equation, model B describing the three age-specific processes (oviposition, egg survival and larval survival) with separate equations, and model C which describes all these processes not for the whole habitat but for the individual beans comprizing it. The logit equation was employed here as a common basis to describe the density-response relationship involved. All three models showed very good fit to the experimental data obtained for both laboratory and wild strains of the weevil. The parameter values characterizing the population dynamics were, however, widely different between the two strains; the laboratory one which had been reared for some 500 generations showed significantly higher reproductive capacity, less sensitive and gentler response to crowding in both adult and egg stages, and more uniform egg distribution among individual beans, as compared with the wild strain newly introduced. Sensitivity analyses using these models suggested that these changes in population characteristics have been attained by the process of domestication or adaptation to stable laboratory conditions through a long period of time. This process seemed in effect to have optimized the population's performances in the laboratory environment. Rambouillet sheep originating from Spanish Merino have been maintained in France as a small and closed flock since their importation. After 190 years of independent evolution, the flock has markedly differentiated from its Spanish parental population. The observed differences between them were characterized by the fixation in Rambouillet of the Mb and F30 alleles, which occurred in Spanish Merino with frequencies of 0.90 and 0.80 respectively (at two distinct blood group loci M and F30) and by the absence in Rambouillet of other alleles or phenogroups (at the Tf and the A, B, C blood group loci) which were observed in Spanish Merino with frequencies ranging from 0.10 to 0.28. On the basis of their phenotypic distributions at 11 blood polymorphic loci, the two populations differed significantly from each other (total chi 2 values = 352.62, 23 df, P less than 0.001). By comparing the observed magnitude of gene frequency differences between Rambouillet and Spanish Merino with the estimate of inbreeding coefficient for Rambouillet obtained from pedigrees, it appeared that the observed genetic differences could be attributed to the evolutionary change due to random drift in the small and closed flock of Rambouillet. 相似文献

Aim We studied how the abundance of the highly invasive fruit‐bearing tree Miconia calvescens DC. influences seed dispersal networks and the foraging patterns of three avian frugivores. Location Tahiti and Moorea, French Polynesia. Methods Our study was conducted at six sites which vary in the abundance of M. calvescens. We used dietary data from three frugivores (two introduced, one endemic) to determine whether patterns of fruit consumption are related to invasive tree abundance. We constructed seed dispersal networks for each island to evaluate how patterns of interaction between frugivores and plants shift at highly invaded sites. Results Two frugivores increased consumption of M. calvescens fruit at highly invaded sites and decreased consumption of other dietary items. The endemic fruit dove, Ptilinopus purpuratus, consumed more native fruit than either of the two introduced frugivores (the red‐vented bulbul, Pycnonotus cafer, and the silvereye, Zosterops lateralis), and introduced frugivores showed a low potential to act as dispersers of native plants. Network patterns on the highly invaded island of Tahiti were dominated by introduced plants and birds, which were responsible for the majority of plant–frugivore interactions. Main conclusions Shifts in the diet of introduced birds, coupled with reduced populations of endemic frugivores, caused differences in properties of the seed dispersal network on the island of Tahiti compared to the less invaded island of Moorea. These results demonstrate that the presence of invasive fruit‐bearing plants and introduced frugivores can alter seed dispersal networks, and that the patterns of alteration depend both on the frugivore community and on the relative abundance of available fruit. 相似文献

Phenylalanine-U-14C and isoliquiritigenin-9-14C were readily incorporated into the antifungal pterocarpan hydroxyphaseollin in soybean hypocotyls that were inoculated with incompatible strains of the phytopathogenic fungus Phytophthora megasperma var. sojae. Hydroxyphaseollin accounted for over half of the phenylalanine and isoliquiritigenin incorporated into ethyl acetate soluble compounds. Daidzein, coumestrol, and sojagol were identified as major compounds which accumulated coordinately with hydroxyphaseollin and contained significant amounts of radioactivity from the labelled isoflavanoid precursors. Hydroxyphaseollin was not present in healthy soybean plants and was not detected until ca. 16 hr after inoculation with the fungus. The pterocarpan then accumulated rapidly between 16 and 48 hr after inoculation, while the greatest accumulations of daidzein, coumestrol, and sojagol occurred between 48 and 72 hr after inoculation, when hydroxyphaseollin accumulation had ceased. Although soybean hypocotyls contained the anthocyanin malvin, neither this compound nor any other flavone pathway product was observed to accumulate after fungus-inoculation. The results therefore indicate that the accumulation of hydroxyphaseollin in fungus-inoculated soybean hypocotyls involves the activation of isoflavanoid biosynthesis with 'direction' of metabolic intermediates to biosynthesis of the pterocarpan. 相似文献

6-Phosphofructo-2-kinase (ATP: D-fructose-6-phosphate-2-phosphotransferase) and D-fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase activities have been found in extracts prepared from etiolated mung bean seedlings. The activity of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase exhibits a sigmoidal shape in response to changes in concentrations of both substrates, D-fructose 6-phosphate and ATP (S0.5 values of 1.8 and 1.2 mM, respectively). Inorganic orthophosphate (Pi) has a strong stimulating effect on the 2-kinase activity (A0.5 at about 2 mM), moderately increasing the Vmax and modifying the response into hyperbolic curves with Km values of 0.4 and 0.2 mM for fructose 6-phosphate and ATP, respectively. 3-Phosphoglycerate (I0.5 about 0.15 mM) partially inhibited the kinase activity by counteracting the Pi activation. In contrast, the activity of D-fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase (Km 0.38 mM) is strongly inhibited by Pi (I0.5 0.8 mM) lowering its affinity to fructose-2,6-P2 (Km 1.4 mM). 3-Phosphoglycerate activites the enzyme (A0.5 at about 0.3 mM) without causing a significant change in its Km for fructose-2,6-P2. The activities of both of these enzymes in relationship to the metabolic role of D-fructose 2,6-bisphosphate in the germinating seed is discussed. 相似文献

Summary Between 3 Nov. 1983 and 9 Apr. 1984, six applications of fertiliser N (ammonium, nitrate or urea) were given to four autumn
sown (26 Oct. 1983)Vicia faba L cultivars, Banner Winter (BW) and Maris Beagle (MBg), cold tolerant cultivars normally sown in the autumn, and Herz Freya
(HF) and Maris Bead (MBd), cold sensitive cultivars more commonly sown in the spring. The effects of additional N were determined
by comparison with plants given zero-N (controls).
Application of N, regardless of form, had no effect on % emergence at the first sampling (15 Dec. 1983); >90% for BW, MBg
and HF, but only 40–60% for MBd. At this time the dry weight, carbon content and nitrogen content of all cultivars was approximately
20% less than that of the seed on planting. No more plants emerged after 15 Dec. 1983. Between 15 Dec. 1983 and 20 Feb. 1984,
all cultivars, regardless of N treatment, showed little change in dry weight, carbon content and nitrogen content but the
proportion of total plant dry weight, carbon content and nitrogen content in the cotyledons decreased while the proportions
in root, stem and leaf tissue increased. On 20 Feb. 1984 there were no N effects. All cultivars but especially BW and MBg,
showed progressive increases in dry weight, carbon content and nitrogen content during the period 20 Feb. 1984 to 8 May 1984.
Pooled results for all four cultivars indicated that on 8 May 1984, plants given ammonium and urea had a greater dry weight,
carbon content and nitrogen content than controls.
At harvest (1–3 Sep. 1984), BW and MBg outyielded (g dw seed m−2) HF and MBd. Pooled results for all cultivars indicated that application of N regardless of form gave increased yield and

The increasing resistance of pathogens to common antibiotics, as well as the need to control urease activity to improve the yield of soil nitrogen fertilization in agricultural applications, has stimulated the development of novel classes of molecules that target urease as an enzyme. In this context, the newly developed compounds on the basis of 1-heptanoyl-3-arylthiourea family were evaluated for Jack bean urease enzyme inhibition activity to validate their role as potent inhibitors of this enzyme. 1-Heptanoyl-3-arylthioureas were obtained in excellent yield and characterized through spectral and elemental analysis. All the compounds displayed remarkable potency against urease inhibition as compared to thiourea standard. It was found that novel compounds fulfill the criteria of drug-likeness by obeying Lipinski’s rule of five. Particularly compound 4a and 4c can serve as lead molecules in 4D (drug designing discovery and development). C3 production was assayed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in cell-free supernatants harvested from thioglycollate-elicited macrophages exposed to a variety of macrophage stimulating and activating agents. Macrophage monolayers treated with the stimulating agents starch, glycogen, and zymosan secreted three- to four-fold less C3 (mean 12 ng/10(5) cells/12 hr) than macrophages exposed to lymphokines containing macrophage-activating factor (MAF) (mean C3 production 44 ng/10(5) cells/12 hr). The increased production of C3 in macrophages exposed to MAF parallels the ability of these macrophages to acquire tumoricidal capacity as monitored in an in vitro 72 hr tumor cell cytotoxicity assay using B16 melanoma cells. Macrophages previously rendered tumoricidal by exposure to MAF and which are refractory to further challenge by MAF following decay of their tumoricidal properties, do not produce C3 on rechallenge with MAF. Exposure of refractory macrophages to liposome-encapsulated MAF overcomes the refractory state and induces re-expression of the tumoricidal phenotype and C3 production. We conclude that quantitative detection of macrophage-generated C3 antigen provides a useful biochemical marker for monitoring the acquisition of tumoricidal properties in macrophages exposed to MAF and offers a sensitive assay for screening novel agents that activate macrophages via mechanisms similar to MAF. 相似文献

Recent studies on the positional behavior of primates reveal that significant seasonal variation occurs in both locomotion
and postures that is related to changes in diet and foraging techniques. Howling monkeys (genusAlouatta), which also have a seasonally varied diet, are predicted to have correspondingly varied positional behaviors. Two groups
of red howling monkeys were studied in a primary rain forest in French Guinana during the dry and wet seasons. During the
dry season, when howler diet is based mainly on leaves, howlers traveled more frequently by quadrupedal walking on large supports,
a mode of progression that is probably inexpensive energetically and relatively stable. During feeding, quadrupedal and tripedal
stand contributed considerably, a posture probably associated with the equal distribution of leaves within a tree crown. In
contrast, during the wet season, when fruit was abundant, howlers fed very frequently by sitting on large supports, probably
because fruit consumption required more time for special manipulation. However, most seasonal changes in feeding postures,
and in travel and feeding locomotion, were difficult to associate directly with dietary shifts. These behavioral changes may
be more highly correlated with slight modifications in microhabitat use (horizontal and vertical daily ranges, similar and

Detailed palynological studies in two adjoining French Pyrenean valleys, complemented by the study of archives, demonstrate that under similar climatic conditions, the forest history of each valley from the Bronze Age to present time was essentially determined by socio-economical constraints, possibly modified by natural characteristics such as topography.
